Matchiareň was born from a desire to create something of our own – a place and a brand built around high-quality matcha, careful preparation and an atmosphere people love coming back to.
It was never meant to be just another café.
So how did the idea of focusing on matcha come about? Matchiareň was originally meant to be a café. Tomáš loved coffee and café culture, but Bratislava was already a strong coffee city. There were plenty of excellent places, and it was clear that opening another traditional café would not be enough. The goal was to build something with its own identity and create it out of genuine passion.
At the time, Tomáš had started to enjoy matcha, yet he barely knew anyone around him who drank it regularly. Hardly any cafés offered it, and when they did, it was often bitter, lumpy and far from appealing. Matcha was mostly found in tea houses, where it was prepared ceremonially as pure powder whisked with water. That respects Japanese tradition, but it appeals to only a small part of the population. It was never going to create the kind of boom that could attract thousands of people and turn them into true “matchaholics”.
The vision was clear: prepare high-quality Japanese matcha with respect for tradition, but in a way that would appeal to as many people as possible. Step by step, recipes and preparation methods were developed to show that matcha does not have to be just a bitter green drink – it can become a daily ritual you genuinely look forward to.
From the first experiments to a Japanese farm.
Getting to the matcha we serve today was a process that went from first experiments all the way to direct cooperation with a Japanese farm. In the beginning, the B2B world was completely unfamiliar, so matcha was naively ordered from ordinary online stores at retail prices, based on brands that had a reputation for top quality on social media. Do not ask how much the customs fees were, or whether there was anything left over in those early days. Ouch.
At the time, the information was not simply laid out on the table, and many things had to be discovered through trial and error because this kind of competition barely existed here yet. Beginner mistakes were unavoidable. And honestly, some of them cost more money, nerves and sleep than anyone could have imagined at the start. But every mistake taught something. Gradually, it became clearer how matcha works – from leaf quality and processing methods to proper preparation.
Then came conversations with suppliers, questions, testing and tasting. Little by little, the chaos turned into a system. And with that came greater confidence to keep moving Matchiareň forward.
The moment direct communication with a farm in Japan became possible for the first time felt slightly surreal. That was when it truly sank in that Matchiareň was becoming real.
Matchiareň is still at the beginning of its journey. Every day brings new lessons about business, people and matcha itself. Some days everything goes exactly as it should, while other days test every bit of patience. Yet it is somewhere between those two extremes that the things Matchiareň can be most proud of are created.
Matchiareň has never been only about a drink. It is the result of turning a long-held idea of having a place of our own into something real.
And although Matchiareň is not a traditional café in the original sense today, it grew from the same dream – to create a place with its own atmosphere, flavour and community.
